One slide in his presentation specifically bragged that Denver performs faster than Apple’s A7. The chip isn’t out yet though, of course, and there are no independent benchmark tests to verify his claims. So it remains to be seen if Nvidia will really out-gun Apple. Denver will be Nvidia’s first 64-bit CPU, and it’s been a long time coming. Its project to build a 64-bit part was first announced in 2011, and Nvidia was originally targeting servers as well.

Those companies are selling Android-based smartphones for less than $200 that are good enough for consumers in developing markets. Today, a former Samsung employee turned analyst at Bernstein Research, Marc Newman, has a note on how Samsung can get its mojo back. “A drastic change in smartphone strategy is required,” says Newman. “The harsh reality is that Samsung is losing the low-end smartphone battle due to uncompetitive prices and specs and must be more aggressive to prevent losing share.” Newman says Samsung has been protecting its margins, and that’s a mistake. He thinks Samsung should go low-end and clobber the Chinese competitors before its too late. “Protecting margins in the low-end is fruitless as it just hands share to Chinese competitors and eventually drives margins down anyway due to less scale advantage.

Since 2007, Google has allowed hardware makers to use Android for free in their phones. Google generally benefits from this arrangement because its operating system plays well with and thus sends a lot of users to its own (money-making) applications. But by creating the Fire devoid of anything Google, Amazon appears to have short-circuited this strategy. Unfortunately for Google, Amazon isnt the only company doing this. A recent study by ABI Research found that some 20% of the smartphones worldwide run a customized version of Android that isnt required to carry other Google apps. A portion of these smartphones do include some Google software, but many replace Googles apps with competing services.

The Passport offers 4.5-inch square HD screen that allows for 60 characters on a line versus 40 for most rectangular smartphones. Partnering with Amazon.com to provide access to over 240,000 Android apps is a welcome bonus. “The BlackBerry Passport offers its size and aspect ratio to accommodate these characters, making it the ideal device for reading e-books, viewing documents and browsing the web. No more worrying about portrait or landscape modes, and no; you aren’t missing anything,” says writer Matt Young in a recent post at the Inside BlackBerry blog. To some, that’s likely to come off as unconvincing justification for a boxy, ugly design that’s more reminiscent of the original BlackBerry pager than a modern smartphone.
