Nvidia Claims 64-bit Denver Chip Will Outperform Apple’s A7 | Computer Hardware – Infoworld

With BlackBerry Passport, a New Era Begins for the Smartphone Maker – NASDAQ.com

One slide in his presentation specifically bragged that Denver performs faster than Apple’s A7. The chip isn’t out yet though, of course, and there are no independent benchmark tests to verify his claims. So it remains to be seen if Nvidia will really out-gun Apple. Denver will be Nvidia’s first 64-bit CPU, and it’s been a long time coming. Its project to build a 64-bit part was first announced in 2011, and Nvidia was originally targeting servers as well.

This Is the Biggest Threat Facing Google Right Now – 1

Eat Butter Fat Time Magazine Cover

Those companies are selling Android-based smartphones for less than $200 that are good enough for consumers in developing markets. Today, a former Samsung employee turned analyst at Bernstein Research, Marc Newman, has a note on how Samsung can get its mojo back. “A drastic change in smartphone strategy is required,” says Newman. “The harsh reality is that Samsung is losing the low-end smartphone battle due to uncompetitive prices and specs and must be more aggressive to prevent losing share.” Newman says Samsung has been protecting its margins, and that’s a mistake. He thinks Samsung should go low-end and clobber the Chinese competitors before its too late. “Protecting margins in the low-end is fruitless as it just hands share to Chinese competitors and eventually drives margins down anyway due to less scale advantage.

It’s Time For Samsung To Use Its Force To Clobber All Smartphone Rivals – Business Insider

Popular Among Time Subscribers How Kentucky Got Obamacare Right Thats because the very guts of the Fire, the open-source Android operating system, is owned by Google. Since 2007, Google has allowed hardware makers to use Android for free in their phones. Google generally benefits from this arrangement because its operating system plays well with and thus sends a lot of users to its own (money-making) applications. But by creating the Fire devoid of anything Google, Amazon appears to have short-circuited this strategy. Unfortunately for Google, Amazon isnt the only company doing this. A recent study by ABI Research found that some 20% of the smartphones worldwide run a customized version of Android that isnt required to carry other Google apps. A portion of these smartphones do include some Google software, but many replace Googles apps with competing services.

The Passport offers 4.5-inch square HD screen that allows for 60 characters on a line versus 40 for most rectangular smartphones. Partnering with Amazon.com to provide access to over 240,000 Android apps is a welcome bonus. “The BlackBerry Passport offers its size and aspect ratio to accommodate these characters, making it the ideal device for reading e-books, viewing documents and browsing the web. No more worrying about portrait or landscape modes, and no; you aren’t missing anything,” says writer Matt Young in a recent post at the Inside BlackBerry blog. To some, that’s likely to come off as unconvincing justification for a boxy, ugly design that’s more reminiscent of the original BlackBerry pager than a modern smartphone.

As Facebook changes Messenger, ‘risky’ app behavior on the rise – CSMonitor.com

With computers, he says users have learned over time to begin guarding against potential viruses and hacks, evidenced by the recent discovery of a Russian group that has allegedly amassed more than a billion usernames and passwords. Nevertheless, there’s an “inherent trust” in smart phones. “We carry the device with us 24/7,” he says. “It’s always on, we have our family pictures, our social information, our corporate information, our games, our banking information, on our device. But then we don’t really seem to care about what apps we’re installing.” He further noted the risks associated with in-app purchases, which have become an important line of revenue for developers looking to monetize their apps. Because users often opt to download free apps, developers feel compelled to make money in other ways. This typically takes the form of sharing users’ data with advertisers.

Yoyo’s Game Development Tool Now Targets Xbox One | Pcworld

YoYos cross-platform development tool lets users write games in a single code base and then publish them to run natively across a number of different smartphones, tablets, PCs and consoles. It has also enhanced functionality for Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1. Having YoYo add support for the companys latest console is good news for Microsoft. Developers will be attracted to writing for the Xbox One console, and then hopefully can be convinced to publish their games for Windows Phone, which needs more apps to be able to better compete with smartphones running Android or iOS. The GameMaker: Studio export feature for Xbox One will be available in the fourth quarter to members of Microsofts licensed Xbox developer programs, including ID@Xbox. GameMaker is available in three different versions: Standard, Professional and Master Collection. The Standard version is free, but has very limited functionality.

RUMOR: The Moto X+1 in-depth, release dates and specs

An earlier leak of the Moto X+1

The apps range in the quality of technology and medical care. Doctor on Demand is widely considered one of the best new entries, with doctors from Stanford and other prominent medical centers, and offers among the best-quality video on iOS, Android, Kindle and desktop. HealthTap has a network of more than 62,000 doctors, MDLIVE offers specialists, including cardiologists and therapists, and some experts have praised American Well for meeting standards of care similar to in-person visits. But others have room for improvement. Patients who sign up for the MeMD app — which only works on a smartphone when additional applications are downloaded — will have to contend with phone calls from a customer service agent who repeats all of the same questions the patient has already answered in the app. PlushCare will launch next month and has just nine doctors and work do to on its app before then. But not all doctors would prescribe video apps as the best medicine.

Sure, the X+1 will have stunning performance, but there will certainly be smartphones on the market with newer hardware. According to a Geekbench database, the Moto X+1 will pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.46GHz and coupled with 2GB of RAM. It will also get an Adreno 330 and will rock Android 4.4.4, the newest version of the platform before Google rolls out Android L in the fall. The screen size is pegged at 5.2-inch and it will be a 1080p Full HD panel. The database says the handset will ship with 24GB of on board storage, but we think that’s a mistake as it is an odd configuration; we would be more inclined to think 32GB. As we said, solid specs yes, but a step below new flagships that boast Snapdragon 805?s with 3GB of RAM and Quad HD screens.
